How to Decide Between Buying or Renting a Scissor Lift

When you run a construction business, one of your biggest overhead costs is the equipment you use. These pieces of heavy machinery may have what seems like a big price tag, but your only other alternative is renting. That can be even more expensive.

How much does it cost to rent a scissor lift?

Rent rates for scissor lifts depend on the time frame of the rental. Many rental companies offer daily, weekly, or monthly rates. The average price of a daily rental ranges from approximately $100 to $150 per day, while renting for a week may run anywhere in the $350 to $500 range. Monthly rates often reach four figures; they may be as low as $800 or as high as around $1,500. On top of these rates, delivery and pickup of the scissor lift you rent will often cost you an additional $150 or so.

If your business requires frequent use of a scissor lift, it’s better to pay upfront for one than to continually add rental expenses to your operating costs. The rule of thumb is: If you are going to rent it for more than 10 months, you should buy it.

Electric Vs. Fuel

After deciding to buy a scissor lift, the next step is deciding which type would better suit your requirements. There are three basic categories are distinct in terms of their power sources and the terrain where they work best:

Electric

Electric scissors are primarily used for indoor use, no fumes, smaller and will fit between door frames. They can also be used outdoors.

Dual Fuel

Just as the name suggests, these scissors run on two types of fuel: gas or propane. This machine can work indoors and outdoors. They can also carry heavier loads but are generally more costly to rent than electric models.

Diesel

Suited for rougher terrain, most of these will have 4X4. These scissors can reach up 53’ and can handle heavy loads. Also more costly to rent electric and dual fuel scissor lifts.
